GIA’s current service takes a more condensed approach. An eligible lab-grown diamond receives one overall category, provided it meets the minimum requirements.

Premium

For a Premium assessment, GIA requires all the relevant criteria:

  • D color
  • VVS clarity or higher
  • Excellent polish
  • Excellent symmetry
  • Excellent cut for a round brilliant

For shapes other than round brilliant, the cut-grade requirement does not apply because GIA specifies it only for round brilliant lab-grown diamonds.

Premium communicates that the stone cleared a demanding group of criteria. It does not reveal whether the clarity result within that range would have been VVS2, VVS1, Internally Flawless, or Flawless under an itemized system.

Standard

GIA’s Standard category allows combinations meeting its stated minimum criteria:

  • VS clarity

There is no reliable conversion formula between a current GIA assessment and an IGI report.

“GIA Premium equals IGI D/VVS” sounds plausible until you examine what each side represents. GIA Premium is a combined category covering color, clarity, polish, symmetry, and applicable cut requirements. IGI D and VVS describe two separate grades and do not, by themselves, state the polish, symmetry, or cut result.
